You’ve had an amazing journey from building an idea for a blog and manifesting it into reality. Now it’s live on the internet to share your thoughts and message with the world. There’s only one problem: no one is visiting your blog. Your blog needs traffic. How can you increase blog traffic? How do you get visitors eyes on your amazing content? There’s no quick fix, but by following these methods you can drive traffic to your new blog.
SEO – Search Engine Optimization
This is one of the most important ways you can increase blog traffic. SEO or Search Engine Optimization is essentially telling search engines like Google that your site exists. The search engine will then show your blog in search results when people search for topics you cover on your blog. How do you tell the search engines you exist? The first thing you need to do is create an XML sitemap of your blog.
Whoa, that sounds technical and must involve code right? Nope! It’s so easy if you are on WordPress. There are lots of free plugins that can help you without having to do anything on your end (other than installing a plugin). I highly recommend using the Yoast SEO plugin to help you optimize your blog’s SEO. This plugin will create XML sitemaps for your automatically so you don’t have to do anything other than ensure that option is enabled!
SEO Keywords are words and phrases that people might use when searching for content. They are words and phrases you use naturally when talking about the topics of your blog. For example a vegan food blogger might write a blog post called “10 Vegan Thanksgiving Recipes Even Meat Eaters With Love!” The keyword for that post might be “vegan Thanksgiving recipes”. So you should include that phrase in your blog post several times.
The Yoast Plugin will help you by showing you how many times you use it within your post and giving you other helpful hints. All you have to do is add your keyword to the Focus Keyword section when you create your blog post or page. You should also use the keyword in images included in the post, such as featured images. Google can’t see images, but it can read the image name and the alt text. By descriptively naming your images and using keywords you can maximize your blog’s SEO.
SEO takes time. It is not something that will instantly catapult your blog into getting thousands of views a day. It’s something that may not pay off until months later. It takes the bots that search engines use a while to find new content once it’s been published to the internet. SEO is also not guaranteed. There are many different factors that impact your blog’s SEO and some of those you can’t control, like how many other sites out there are trying to rank for those same keywords you are using. That means there’s no guarantee your blog will make it to the top of the search results. That’s okay thought! You don’t need to be ranked #1 to be successful.
Social Media Marketing
Social media is great for connecting with your blog’s fans, but it’s also a great way to increase blog traffic and send traffic to your new blog! Do you share your posts to your social media accounts? If not, now is the time to start! You should share your new blog posts across all of your social media accounts multiple times. Why? Unfortunately, not all your social media followers will see every single update you post. That means you need to be strategic in how you share, and when you share your posts.
Sharing your post on social media doesn’t stop once your post has been created! You can also share older posts. New fans may not have seen them, or even your old fans might have missed them thanks to algorithms! Just be careful not to only share links to your posts. Keep your social media content engaging by sharing other content too including from different sources.
There are TONS of Facebook groups just for bloggers! Groups are an interactive way to help drive traffic to your new blog. There are groups that offer support and companionship, while others may specialize in promotion. Each group has their own rules so be sure to read those when you join. Some groups have special promotion days that you can participate in by sharing yoru blog’s content. These can be a good way to get new traffic, but it can also result in traffic that doesn’t stay around.
A good way holistically grow your blog is by sharing useful content in groups related to your blog’s content. For example if you are in a gardening group, and your blog discusses gardening you can a) use questions posed in the group as ideas for blog topics b) share your blog posts that answer questions or address issues that people encounter in that group. Of course some groups have rules against self-promotion so be sure the content you share is in compliance with any rules the group might have.

Ads are alive and well on the internet. If you have the budget for it, using advertisements on social media or through other providers can drive traffic to your site. Advertisements are especially good for things like product launches or other promotions. The best advertisements target specific audiences for a specific event such as product launch or blog launch.
Do you have an email or newsletter list? An email list is a very valuable asset to any blogger. These are some of your most loyal and devoted fans, who choose to give you direct access to their inbox. You can share your latest blog posts in your email newsletters either in part or the whole blog post.

RSS feeds essentially give your readers an easy way to get every blog post you write sent to them. Some feed readers will email your post others provide their own platform where readers can follow all their favorite blogs. Two popular examples are Feedly and Bloglovin. However, if your blog is on WordPress you already have an rss feed built in. Just head on over to yourblogurl.com/feed to check it out! Some readers may use email clients like Outlook to get notified about new blog posts or a built in capability of their browser.
Word of Mouth
In the real world or online word of mouth can help increase blog traffic or drive traffic to your new blog. Tell your friends and family about your blog! Tell anyone you meet that might benefit from discovering your blog. Ask your friends, family, blogging friends, and readers to do the same. You never know who will want to visit your blog so don’t forget about sharing it’s existence with your real world connections too!
Guest posts can be very helpful to increase blog traffic. They can involve having a guest post on your blog or you posting on another blogger’s blog. The key to a good guest post is providing a helpful, valuable post that will work harmoniously with the blog you are a guest on (or is a guest on your blog). For example, a blogger in the photography niche might guest post on a fashion blogger’s blog about taking good fashion photos.
Guest Post Word Of Caution
You may get unsolicited emails from people looking to share content on your blog. Be careful, much of the time they are low quality articles. Only work with bloggers you trust and who can provide high quality work!
Guest Post Tip
Large or popular blogs may seek paid contributors. Guest posting can be an additional revenue stream for your blog! However, even if a large blog in your niche doesn’t offer paid guest posts it can still be a valuable use of your time to reach a broader audience especially if you want to increase blog traffic and build your reputation.
Driving traffic to your blog is something every blogger will face. By using these methods to increase blog traffic you can nurture your blog from 0 to success beyond your dreams. Every blog starts from nothing, the key is how you respond to that humble beginning and the steps you take. Put in the effort to foster your blog’s community and help readers find your blog and you will find new visitors coming to your blog every day.
